I was wondering: Whom of you have been to the Amsterdam zoo, to “Artis”? Wie is er wel eens in Artis geweest? In fact: I am sure about the Dutch people here present. Van de hollanders weet ik het zeker. They have been to Artis! Every Dutch child has to go there, at least once in it’s youth. But what about our African friends? Do they go to the zoo? Have they been to Amsterdam zoo, to Artis? Maybe not. Misschien niet. Because: you people have all those animals at home, in the wild. Or not? Of niet?
Are there any crocodiles where you come from? This man, on teevee last week, in Australia if I remember well. He got lost in a swamp. He was in a tree-top for four days and nights while crocodiles with their red eyes glowing in the dark where waiting at the bottom of the tree for him to fall out of it. Fortunately he was saved. - Like this woman, this pregant woman in our first reading today! There’s a monster, a dragon at her feet, ready to devour her child once she would give birth. Is it some prehistoric monster of which we know that they once populated the earth? Which dragon is it that threatens to kill the child? Door welke draak wordt het kind bedreigd? I call upon the mothers here present. Which are the dragons which threaten the lives of your children? Door welke draken worden onze kinderen bedreigd? The dragon in the bible-tale has seven heads. But in real live their are many more. Many of those heads we can call by name:
Hunger, honger. Disease, ziekte - bijvoorbeeld HIV for example. Poverty, armoede. Pollution, vervuiling. Crime, misdaad. Sexual abuse, sexueel misbruik. These are seven. Dit zijn er zeven.
The apocalyptic woman, traditionally identified with Mary; de vrouw uit de Apocalypse die volgens de traditie wordt vereenzelvigd met Maria; she gives birth “to a son, a male child, who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter”. “And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne.” And the woman herself is saved as well.
Beloved, veelgeliefden: God is your own and your childrens savety. Let yourself be ruled by the son with the iron scepter. This iron scepter, deze ijzeren staf, is God’s kracht, God’s power which will protect us, waardoor we beschermd worden; waardoor we zelf kracht krijgen, which will give us power to resist hunger, disease, poverty, pollution, crime, sexual abuse, bad influences and so forth: alle the different heads of the dragon. Eventually this dragon will be slain. Death in it’s many appearances will be conquered. That’s the meaning of this celebration: In Mary, like her son, snatched up to God and his throne, we receive the promise of the eventual victory of all the faithful, of those who are faithful indeed.
The gentle forces will win in the end a Dutch woman poet said in the 1920ties. How important this message still is for our time. These “gentle forces”, deze “zachte krachten” zien we vóór ons in het prachtige Maria-beeld van de Vredeskerk; we see them incorporated in the wonderful statue of Mary of Vredeskerk. This statue was made for our two communities, black, white and all colours in between. Because “our Mary” is neither white nor black. We can all identify with her. I consider it a wonderful and a great thing that, for the fourth time on a row, we will carry the statue of mother and child through the streets of our neigbourhood. So that everybody who will see this statue may know: The gentle forces will win in the end. Zodat iedereen weet: de zachte krachten zullen uiteindelijk toch winnen. Amen.
