Tenhemelopneming Maria (2011)

Feest · 15 augustus · Maria ten hemelopneming · wit

Twelve days ago, here in the middle of the church, in front of the altar: a small coffin with a beautiful child, six candles around and cuddly toys. Closing the coffin: the very last time that the parents would be face to face with their child. Then, the grandmother of the child screams through the church: “Why? Was one not enough?” And she lifts her fist towards the altar.

Last week I saw the grandmother and the parents again. Afgelopen week zag ik hen terug. Ofcourse they were still devastated. The mothers brother had died three years earlier of cancer. The new born child had been named after him. Why did this child get born at all - if it was to die so young? Why did we, it’s parents and grandmother get born at all having to live through all this? Why? Waarom? De eeuwige vraag. The eternal question. Job’s question, in the Bible.

What does a priest do in such circumstances? What does he say? Like Job’s friends I would have liked to only sit with these people and say nothing at all. Because: what could one say? I mentioned Job. Ik nóemde Job. Mother and daughter exchanged a meaningful glance. And the mother, the grandmother of the dead child said: “We are not Job! We are not Abraham! We are only mothers!” “Wij zijn gewoon moeders! Niet Job, niet Abraham” - zei oma …

Today, beloved, we celebrate the Feast of Mary’s Assumption. In today’s first reading, from the book of the Apocalypse, we recognize her, Jesus’ mother, eternally giving birth. And the baby being threatened: “An enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns (…). The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment it was born.” This red dragon: symbol of the fears and anxieties of all parents in all ages.

Mary’s Assumption means a message of hope for all bereaved parents and others.

“Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished” I believe: these words speak of Mary’s faith, woorden die uitdrukken: het geloof van Maria. This faith carries her on, even when standing, one day, under the cross on which her Son is nailed. Her faith makes her look deeper and further.

“Her child was snatched up to God and to his throne”. And todays second reading, from the first letter to the Corinthians says: “the last of the enemies to be destroyed is death”, “de laatste vijand die uitgeschakeld wordt is de dood” - zegt de eerste Korinthenbrief.

Christ is risen! Christus is verrezen! Mary is taken up into heaven. And that’s the way to which we all are called. We are called to the live in the light, to the live hereafter. Geloof je dat? Do you believe? Can you believe? Can the bereaved parents and grandmother believe? Are they and we and you able to believe? The answer is up to you. Het antwoord mag je zelf geven …
